Keynote Newsletter - Spring 2024 Print

President's Report

Hello wonderful  IAMSS members!

Happy Spring to you!  It is 72 degrees here in Des Moines today and it is officially sandal-season!

I'm going to cut straight to the chase and let you know what an impressive conference we have planned for you April 11 & 12.  We've always touted the fact that one of the best benefits to being an IAMSS member is the networking opportunity.  Our conference theme this year is "Building Connections" and we plan to do just that.  In addition to the obvious benefit of exponential problem-solving ability, social connections in life impact both our physical and mental health.  Connection with others has been shown to improve a person's ability to recover from stress / anxiety / depression and helps lead to better quality of life.

Our keynote speaker, Lisa Even, Joy Connoisseur, will kick off our conference with an energetic, fun session that will explore the ripple effect of building genuine connections.  And the rest of our 2-day agenda will build upon this important message.

Can't wait to gather with our group and take in the knowledge of these exceptional speakersSee you soon!

I have been with St. Anthony for 5 years, the last 2 in my current role. I was born and raised in the Carroll area and now live on my husband’s family farm with my husband, Josh, and our 4 year old daughter, Chloe. I still consider myself fairly new in the credentialing world, but I really enjoy the challenges this profession can bring on. I have enjoyed learning and growing within this role and am looking forward to continuing to do so.

Secretary

Amy Meyer, IAMSS Board Secretary

For the past six years, I have been in the locum tenens world with three different start-up companies.  At the moment, I am between jobs and looking for my next opportunity.  I have created and managed internal credentialing processes while also handling any privileging, licensing and provider enrollment needs for locums physicians and allied health providers.  Prior to that I was with Paramount Health Options for about ten years, working on delegated provider enrollment, P&P, Credentialing Committee management and NCQA CVO accreditation.  I have been CPCS certified since 2012 and worked fully remote since 2018.  I have enjoyed my last year on the IAMSS board – it has pushed me out of my comfort zone and brought me some great friendships!

Outside of work, I have two boys keeping me busy with show choir and percussion (marching band, jazz band & combo) – this fall I will have a junior and an 8th grader.  You can also find me in the gym several days a week and working with clients as a nutrition coach.

Hospital state licensing rules updated, REH rules finalized

This week, the Department of Inspections, Appeals and Licensing adopted rules updating the Iowa Administrative Code chapter on hospital licensing and establishing licensure for rural emergency hospitals.

The updates focused on reducing duplicative language and removing outdated or unnecessary language. In the rule, the department included an update advocated for by IHA that allows hospitals to review and update surgical privileges at least every three years rather than every two years, aligning the timeline with recently updated standards from The Joint Commission.

Below is the clip from the Iowa Code:

481—51.18(135B) Surgical services. All hospitals providing surgical services shall be properly organized and equipped to provide for the safe and aseptic treatment of surgical patients.

51.18(1) Written policies and procedures governing surgical services shall be developed and implemented in consultation with the hospital’s medical staff and, at a minimum, provide for:

                a. Surgical services under the direction of a qualified doctor of medicine or osteopathy.

                b. Delineation of the privileges and qualifications of individuals authorized to provide surgical services as set forth in the hospital’s medical staff bylaws and in accordance with subrule 51.5(4), including a periodic review and update of surgical privileges not to exceed every three years or other term permitted by an accrediting organization approved by CMS for federal certification, whichever is longer. The surgical service must maintain a roster of these individuals specifying the surgical privileges of each.

Quick and Easy Recipe

Grilled Shrimp and Chicken Fajitas

grilled chicken fajitas

Ingredients

  • 3 limes
  • 1 tsp. ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp. ground cumin
  • Pinch of cayenne
  • 4 tbsp. olive oil, divided
  • 1 lb. large peeled and deveined shrimp, tails discarded
  • 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into 1 1/2-in. pieces
  • 1 lb. mixed-color peppers, cut into 1-in. pieces
  • 3 jalapeños, sliced 1/2 in. thick
  • 2 small red onions, cut into 1-in.-thick wedges
  • Kosher salt and pepper
  • 12 small flour tortillas
  • Sour cream, sliced radishes and chopped cilantro, for serving

Step 1 Finely grate the zest of 1 lime into a bowl. Add coriander, cumin, cayenne and 2 tablespoons oil and mix to combine. Transfer half to a medium bowl and toss with shrimp. In a second bowl, toss chicken with remaining mixture.

Step 2 Thread each protein onto its own skewer. Halve all limes.

Step 3 Toss peppers, jalapeños and onions with remaining 2 tablespoons oil and 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Thread jalapeños, peppers and onions onto their own skewers.

Step 4 Heat grill to medium-high. Season chicken and shrimp skewers with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Step 5 Add skewers to grill and cook, turning occasionally, until chicken is cooked through (8 to 10 minutes), vegetables are just tender (4 to 8 minutes) and shrimp is opaque throughout (3 to 4 minutes). Transfer skewers to platter as they finish cooking. Grill limes, cut sides down, and tortillas until lightly charred, about 1 minute.

Step 6 Squeeze 1 grilled lime half over chicken and shrimp. Serve with vegetables, tortillas, remaining limes, sour cream, radishes and cilantro.
